MOLLIE STONE

Mollie Stone holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College and a Master of Music degree in conducting from Westminster Choir College. She served as the Graduate Associate for the Amherst College music department in 2001, where she taught music history and theory, and assisted in directing all of the college choirs. During this time, she also served as conductor for the Hampshire Choral Society’s Young People’s Chorus and the Western Wind summer program’s children’s choir.

In 2001, Ms. Stone received a grant from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation to travel to South Africa to create a DVD on how to teach black South African choral music in the oral tradition. Ms. Stone has studied at the University of Cape Town, and currently gives workshops on black South African choral music across the United States. Most recently, she presented her DVD, “Vela Vela” through Ravinia Festival’s Outreach Program as well as at ACDA and MMEA conventions in New York, Massachusetts and Maine.

In 2006, Ms. Stone received another generous grant from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation that enabled her to return to South Africa to study how South Africans are using choral music in the struggle against HIV. Since her return, she has been working with the nonprofit organization “Yes Is A World” to create educational performances about South African choral music and HIV education and prevention.

Ms. Stone grew up singing in Chicago Children’s Choir, and is proud to serve as Director of Madrigal Ensemble of the world-renowned Concert Choir and Conductor of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Choir.
